SPECIAL REQUEST FROM SGT JORGE CHAVEZ

This is a special request from active member, Sergeant Jorge Chavez who works Narcotics. This message went out Department wide. Although many of us are well beyond the maximum age limit of 44, feel free to pass this on to family members who might be in the age range.

Also, you can email Jorge with words of encouragement directly to his email at J1Chavez@lasd.org

I Need A Hero

To my LASD family,

I need assistance and I’m hoping all of you will help me. I was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and I am now in the fight for my life. I will need a bone marrow transplant in the very near future to have a serious chance at winning this fight and I currently do not have a matching bone marrow donor. There have been a few donor drives already throughout the department with many more to come. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of time.

Due to the maximum age limit being 44, many of you were unable to register as a donor at the drives. Here’s where all of you come into play. I am asking everyone to please consider having your family members or friends who are between the ages of 18-44 to register as a bone marrow donor. I know my life saving match is out there and I hope you can help me find them soon. Even if you or your family member isn’t my match, hopefully you can be someone else’s match and save a life.

To register as a donor, you can simply go to join.bethematch.org/swabforjorge. Registering is very easy and a swab kit will be mailed to you to complete and return. The process for donating bone marrow has changed and is now minimally invasive. It’s just like donating platelets or blood. There is also a Facebook page titled Save Sergeant Jorge Chavez with similar information that I hope you can share to help get more people to register as donors.

If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Sgt. Nicole Davis, Det. Cris Reyes, or Rebecca Robbins at (909) 450-2700 or Sgt. Liza Vera at (562) 946-7125.

I sincerely thank you in advance. With your help, I am confident I will be a survivor!
