The Sheriff Relief Association Is saddened to announce the passing of District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation Assistant Chief Oreal Cotton on March 20,2023 at the age of 74.

 

Oreal Cotton Assistant Chief of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation served the citizens of Los Angeles County for 32 years, including 12 years as a deputy sheriff.

Oreal had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement. 

In 1989, he was honored by the District Attorney’s Office as the Outstanding Investigator of the year.  He has the distinction of being the first African American to attain the rank of Captain in the District Attorney’s Office.  He distinguished himself further when he was appointed the first African American Assistant Chief in the history of the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation.

In 1996, Oreal was recognized by the Black Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles County with their annual Career Achievement Award.

In 2000, he was awarded the Peace Maker of the Year Award from then Governor Gray Davis. 

 

The Association of Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff’s (ALADS) and District Attorney Investigators honored Oreal with their Outstanding Leadership Award for 2003.

During the past several years Oreal served as an executive officer and a key component of the District Attorney’s Command Staff.  

Additionally, Oreal was a driving force in the recruitment, mentoring, and hiring of highly qualified law enforcement personnel as District Attorney Investigators.

Oreal and his wife Deborah are the proud parents of an adult daughter and son, Alicia Cotton and O’Real Cotton Jr

 

Oreal was a veteran and served in the United States Air Force.
